Definition of “Collateralized Debt Obligation (CDO)” :

A Collateralized Debt Obligation (CDO) is a type of financial instrument that pools together cash flow-generating assets, like mortgages, bonds, and loans, and repackages them into discrete classes or tranches based on the level of credit risk. Investors can then purchase these tranches, allowing them to invest in a diverse set of assets indirectly. The risk and return vary from tranche to tranche, with senior tranches being safer but offering lower returns, and junior tranches being riskier but offering higher potential returns. In South Africa, CDOs are typically used by financial institutions for risk management and investment purposes.
