A positive externality refers to a benefit that is enjoyed by a third-party as a result of an economic transaction. In other words, it’s an unintended positive consequence that affects someone who did not choose to be involved in that transaction. For example, the whole community may benefit from a neighbor’s decision to renovate their house, as it could increase local property values.
